James Lassen: Paintings and Drawings
Expect No Mercy
charcoal on paper
This piece was done on 3 different horizontal sheets of paper to create its immense size. Each third was mapped out on a grid and finished separate from the others because I was working in a room with an 8 ft ceiling and only 77 inches from doorframe to window frame! It's a self portrait inspired both by Andy Warhol's giant ink blot paintings (where you're looking UP to see most of the work) and the mid-90s martial arts movie where the piece's title originates from. The villain had a similar portrait in his mansion.
